9-10-09  Okemos defeats Portage Central in emotional opener
Text:
The Okemos girls swim team, fans and parents bid an emotional goodbye prior to the start of the meet to Senior water polo captain Adam Nevells who died in a tragic car accident the week before.  Adam was well liked by all who crossed his path and his memory will live on forever.

It was very difficult for the girls to come back and swim fast after the moment of silence for Adam but they did a commendable job.  The final meet score was Okemos 114 Portage Central 69.

Event winners for Okemos were:

200 Medley--Lauren Dudley, Madison Batchelor, Kylie Holden and Amelia Marsh.
200 Free--Laura Kruger
200IM--Kylie Holden
50 Free--Lauren Dudley
Diving--Carolyn Wallace
100 Fly--Kylie Holden
100 Free--Amelia Marsh
200 Free Relay--Lauren Dudley, Lydia Roth, Madison Batchelor and Amelia Marsh
100 Back--Amelia Marsh

All 3 relays made state cuts.  Particular congratulations go to the 200 Medley Relay which has now already beaten the league meet winning time and league meet record set last season.  Lauren's 28.8 backstroke leadoff and Kylie's 27.0 fly split were both faster than what they posted last season.  Both the medley and 200 free relays were about 1 and a half seconds off the pool records set by Birmingham Groves and Ann Arbor Pioneer.  Amelia picked up a state cut in the 100 while Lauren picked up the state cut in the 50.   Swimmer of the meet honors go to Kylie Holden for picking up 4 state cuts including individual cuts in the 200IM and 100 fly.  The 100 fly time was a personal best.  Good "newcomer" swims were posted by Monique Pentecost in the 100 breast and Kenzie Krumm and Marie Marie Marsh in the 50 and 100 freestyle.  It is also nice to see our "B" relay teams compete well with the other teams' "A" relays.
